Abstract
Motivation is a key factor influencing students’ success in language learning at higher education institutions. In the 21st century, developments in digital learning, blended classrooms, and autonomous learning environments have transformed the ways students engage with linguistic education. This study examines the evolution of student language learning motivation paradigms from a linguistic perspective through a literature review. A descriptive-analytical approach was employed to synthesize relevant national and international journal articles published over the last decade. The findings reveal a shift from primarily extrinsic motivation, such as grades and academic recognition, to intrinsic motivation, self-regulated learning, and active engagement in language learning activities. Furthermore, effective pedagogical strategies, supportive lecturers, and the integration of educational technology play a critical role in enhancing motivation for language acquisition. This review contributes to theoretical understanding in applied linguistics and provides insights for designing adaptive, student-centered language learning strategies in higher education.
