Abstract
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic lung condition characterized by airflow obstruction and associated with exposure to cigarette smoke, air pollution, and other environmental factors. Adolescents in Islamic boarding schools or pesantren are at risk of exposure to these factors, necessitating promotive and preventive efforts through lung health education and breathing technique training. The Santri Paru Sehat program aims to enhance student’s knowledge of lung health, introduce early detection of COPD, and teach pursed-lip breathing a simple technique beneficial for respiratory health. This activity was conducted on May 23, 2026, at the Assalafi Al-Fithrah Islamic Boarding School in Surabaya, involving 50 male and female students. The methods employed included interactive lectures, discussions and Q&A sessions, educational video screenings, booklet distribution, demonstrations and practice of pursed-lip breathing, and free health screenings. Evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test methods to measure improvements in participants knowledge. Participants demonstrated high enthusiasm throughout the event, evidenced by their active engagement in discussions and the practice of breathing techniques. Evaluation results showed an increase in average knowledge scores in the post-test. Furthermore, the students were able to correctly perform the pursed-lip breathing technique following the demonstration and guided practice. This approach combining education, skills training, and peer-educator empowerment holds potential as a sustainable model for health promotion within Islamic boarding schools.
