Abstract
Secondhand smoke exposure is an important public health concern that can adversely affect children and adolescents. Schools provide a strategic setting for increasing students’ knowledge and awareness of the health risks associated with secondhand smoke exposure and its prevention. This community service activity aimed to increase students’ knowledge about the dangers of secondhand smoke exposure and strengthen students’ involvement in preventing its health impacts through educational games. The activity was conducted among students of SMP An-Najiyah Surabaya using an interactive educational approach consisting of health education, discussion, question-and-answer sessions, ice-breaking activities, and educational games. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test questionnaires consisting of 10 questions addressing the definition of passive smoking, cigarette smoke constituents, health effects, the vulnerability of children and adolescents, smoke-free areas, and strategies to prevent secondhand smoke exposure. The results showed that the mean knowledge score increased from 52.64% in the pre-test to 72.78% in the post-test, representing an increase of 20.14 percentage points. Knowledge increased across 9 of the 10 evaluated topics. The greatest improvements were observed in participants’ knowledge of the chemicals contained in cigarette smoke and smoke-free areas, whereas knowledge regarding the effects of smoke exposure on teeth and bones decreased, indicating the need for further reinforcement of this topic. These findings indicate that school-based interactive education supported by educational games has the potential to improve students’ knowledge regarding the dangers of secondhand smoke exposure. Future activities should focus on strengthening students’ involvement, engaging teachers and parents, and conducting longer-term evaluations to determine whether increased knowledge is sustained and translated into changes in attitudes and preventive behaviors.
